Main hoist race
Yesterday was the penultimate day sailing… And was the long haul race… But to start, the main hoist race… Unfortunately our boat came last….! We tried though! From here we moved on and came a solid second in the distance race!
Now on a mooring buoy just outside cowes, with a few more shorter races planned for today… Then into Gunwharf for the clean up.
Forgot how fun it was cooking at an angle…
Sailing from Portland to Torbay. Cooking at angle – forgot what fun it was – the chilli was tasty though!
Becalmed in Osborne Bay
Well, after an interesting slow first day with the new crew they are slowly adjusting to the idea of sailing… Now we’re at anchor in Osborne Bay and will be leaving here at 0430 heading for Portland. Hopefully there will be more wind tomorrow. But it’s not looking too good….
For now i’m off to bed shortly as I’m back up at half 12 for two hours teaching these guys how to run an anchor watch.
Back in Portsmouth
Well, after an awesome week sailing with an adult crew and getting to learn a lot more like parking and using the spinnaker and genoa. Now I’m a bit tired…. But it’s fine. New crew don’t arrive until Saturday… But for now we’re cracking on with some maintenance.
Channel Crossing
Today we sailed across from cherbourg to Poole – in 5 hours – was a sweet run across. Bit choppy but it was all good! Now just waiting on a curry, which is cooking onboard!
In Cherbourg
Had a sweet sail over from Weymouth. Set on one tack the whole way here and enjoyed the cruise. Now in for a late dinner in a bar somewhere here!
Alongside in Weymouth
Had a pretty sweet day sailing…. Left Gunwharf at about 9am after a half 6 start. Working our way through the sails,.. Starting with Yankee 2 then up to 1 then up to the Genoa. The crews all good and learning their way around quickly. Now I’m sat waiting for fish and chips
off to Cherbourg tomorrow.
Back on Challenger 4
Well, I’m back on challenger 4. Off to France tomorrow hopefully… Should be a good week.
Makes for an interesting read….
Here is the link to an article I found.
After spending a bit of time reading this article and a fair few of the comments I had formed my own views about what Jony Ive has done for Apple. He may well be the SVP of Design, but as a few (well in the minority) of people commented he would not be as successful if he didn’t have the design engineers and software engineers behind him. Ok, so he can take aluminium and turn into aesthetically pleasing shapes and forms, but if it weren’t that the engineers also took the same level of perfection by making the internals and software as slick and efficient as they could then the products wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful as they have been.
The credit does usually end up with people at the top and very few people know about how these products are manufactured. Effectively a modern day electronic sweat shop. But saying that, through the media we have seen probably the best bits of the manufacturing sites, and it’s fair to say they are probably better than the vast majority of others in that area of the world. But there is still a long way to go improving manufacturing abroad. However from a corporations view like Apple this would only increase the cost, and at present this is what very few companies are willing to do.
Someday I would indeed like to travel out to places like China and Taiwan etc just to see what these conditions are like. I bet very few designers in Britain and America have seen where their products end up being made. But if they did they would definitely be thinking again about their manufacturing system.
In other news, I’ve got until the end of the month at uni, then i’m off crewing for two weeks – one week as Watch Leader and one as Mate. Should be great, i’m also currently studying for my RYA Yachtmaster theory, so will be putting that into practice as much as possible. Then i’m back in Bournemouth for my final term of second year and the continued hunt for a placement!
Sorting my portfolio
Well, my portfolio is nearly complete. Until I finish more work that is! I also need to do a bit more on my website when I get chance.
